Kalman Filter for Spinning Spacecraft Attitude Estimation

چکیده

This paper presents a Kalman filter using a seven-component attitude state vector comprising the angular momentum components in a n inertial reference frame, the angular momentum components in the body frame, and a rotation angle. The relatively slow variation of these parameters makes this parameterization advantageous for spinning spacecraft attitude estimation. The filter accounts for the constraint that the magnitude of the angular momentum vector is the same in the inertial and body frames by employing a reduced six-component error state. Four variants of the filter, defined by different choices for the reduced error state, a re tested against a quaternion-based filter using simulated data for the THEMIS mission. Three of these variants choose three of the components of the error state to be the infinitesimal attitude error angles, facilitating the computation of measurement sensitivity matrices and causing the usual 3x3 attitude covariance matrix to be a submatrix of the 6x6 covariance of the error state. These variants differ in their choice for the other three components of the error state. The variant employing the infinitesimal attitude error angles and the angular momentum components in an inertial reference frame as the error state shows the best combination of robustness and efficiency in the simulations. Attitude estimation results using THEMIS flight data a re also presented.

Spacecraft Attitude Rate Estimation From Geomagnetic Field Measurements

This paper develops methods for estimating the rotation rate of a spacecraft using only measured magnetic field data. The goal is to provide rate information for use in applications such as de-tumbling, nutation damping, and momentum management without using gyroscopes. Two algorithms are developed, a deterministic algorithm and an extended Kalman filter. Both algorithms employ the magnetic fie...

Vision-Based Relative State Estimation Using the Unscented Kalman Filter

A new approach for spacecraft absolute attitude estimation based on the unscented Kalman filter (UKF) is extended to relative attitude estimation and navigation. This approach for nonlinear systems has faster convergence than the approach based on the standard extended Kalman filter (EKF) even with inaccurate initial conditions in attitude estimation and navigation problems. The filter formulat...

Spacecraft Angular Rate Estimation Algorithms For Star Tracker-Based Attitude Determination

In this paper, two different algorithms are presented for the estimation of spacecraft body angular rates in the absence of gyro rate data for a star tracker mission. In first approach, body angular rates are estimated with the spacecraft attitude using a dynamical model of the spacecraft. The second approach makes use of a rapid update rate of star camera to estimate the spacecraft body angula...

Sparse Gauss–Hermite Quadrature Filter with Application to Spacecraft Attitude Estimation

A novel sparse Gauss–Hermite quadrature filter is proposed using a sparse-grid method for multidimensional numerical integration in the Bayesian estimation framework. The conventional Gauss–Hermite quadrature filter is computationally expensive for multidimensional problems, because the number of Gauss–Hermite quadrature points increases exponentially with the dimension. The number of sparse-gr...

Particle Filtering for Attitude Estimation Using a Minimal Local-Error Representation

Spacecraft attitude estimation is the process of determining the orientation of the spacecraft with respect to a reference frame. Many nonlinear filtering methods have been applied to spacecraft attitude estimation. The extended Kalman filter (EKF) has been the most widely used nonlinear filtering method for realtime attitude estimation so far [1]. It works well in the linear regime where the l...
